Art Ideas Blog Six: How to make a Tunnock's Teacake Origami Rose

Impress your friends over a cup of tea with this very simple piece of origami. Using the foil wrapper of a Tunnock’s Tea Cake (or any other foil wrapper of a similar size and shape) I’ll show you how to make a lovely little origami rose. We could use paper, but we’re putting a wee twist on things today.

What you’ll need:

• A Tunnock’s Tea Cake
• A cup of tea (optional)
• Nerves of steel (mandatory)

Step 1:

The most important step – eat the tea cake. Don't rush this!

Step 2:

Flatten the foil carefully, smoothing out any creases. It doesn’t have to be perfect, just as flat as you can get it without tearing the foil.

Step 3:

Next, make a fold about a third from the top, making sure it’s straight and in line with the edges.

Step 4:

Gently and loosely roll the foil, keeping the fold at the top.

Step 5:

With the fold facing upwards, pinch the rolled foil just above the middle.

Step 6:

Where you’ve pinched, slowly twist and squeeze the foil to begin creating the stem of the rose. Leave the bottom for now…

Step 7:

Fan out the bottom part slightly. This will become a leaf on the stem.

Step 8:

Take the bottom right hand corner that you’ve fanned out and fold it upwards.

Step 9:

Now for the tricky bit. Pinch and squeeze the bottom of the rose to create the rest of the stem, leaving the part that you’ve folded upwards to create the leaf on the stem.

Step 10:

With your thumb and forefinger, roll the stem above and below the leaf. For added detail, carefully shape the leaf and fold down the fold at the top of the rose.

Step 11:

Make more! The beauty of making more is that you’ve the perfect excuse to eat more tea cakes.
